Difficulty Sleeping

Just some sleep, please!  If you are experiencing anxiety, or have survived trauma, your body often responds by keeping you on “alert”, or in an increased state of hyper arousal. You may have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or difficulty in falling back to sleep after waking.  Recurring dreams of an event or worried thoughts may interrupt your sleep.  Disruption in your sleep can affect your concentration, mood, and daily functioning, which in turn can cause more distress. You are longing for restfulness and you can find it.

Alicia’s story:

“I was so used to losing sleep almost every night from worry. I seemed to be worried about everything. I would worry about my daughter who was going to school, I would worry about my son, who was fighting with his father every other day over his grades. I was worried about my husband’s drinking and spending money at the casino. I kept having these feelings like I was going to have a panic attack—you know—thinking I was losing my breath, that my heart was going to beat right out of my chest. I got to the point where I wasn’t even leaving the house anymore. My world was getting smaller and smaller and I was not even going to the grocery store because I was so afraid of having a panic attack and passing out right there on the floor.”

Jasmine tells her story:

Sleepless Nights“I’m in a vicious cycle, I tell you. I have been working some extra hours and trying to pay my bills. I ran up my debts when I was out of work when my last company laid me off. I am trying to pay my credit card down and save some money if I can. My rent went up and my credit card interest rate just got raised. I don’t know what it’s going to take to get ahead. Now here I am at this new job for just two months and they’re talking about downsizing and it’s got to the point that it seems like no matter how hard I work or how much overtime I do, it might not be enough. Now, I have trouble sleeping. I just don’t calm down at night and I’m so worried. I don’t think I can make another layoff. I’d like to get some more education, but I don’t have the money or the time to do it. I’m very scared and now I’m just plain worn out.”
