Who are our clients?
Our clients at Psychological Health and Wellness turn to us for help in resolving a past trauma; physical trauma, sexual trauma, emotional trauma, childhood trauma, events that have caused enormous pain and suffering in their lives.
I would say 9 out of 10 people that schedule appointments for consultation have had prior treatment failure. I never really intended it to be that it’s just, that’s what happened. People would complain about what’s happening in their therapy and so someone they know will say, well, you ought to see Bob and that’s how that works. I get new clients that are new clients for the first time in therapy as well but a lot of the clients that I get by word of mouth are people that have had prior treatment failures.
Case Example:
One of the new people that I’m working with, this is her third time in therapy and she’s been in therapy for a grand total of 25 or 26 months between the three prior experiences. We’re in our fourth session now and she’s saying “no one else ever brought this up” and that’s what we hear almost every session. “I never thought of it that way, why didn’t somebody else tell me that? It would have been a lot easier three or four years ago to fix this.”
This is what differentiates my treatment program from other treatment programs.
Why does previous therapy sometime fail and what is the fault of previous therapists and their treatments?
I would say 9 out of 10 people that schedule an appointment for consultation have had prior treatment failure and have come to me for therapy after seeking help without success with previous therapists.
For a lot of therapists out there therapy is like a horse race. They get somebody sitting in their room and it’s like they’re in the gate. And the alarm goes off (the session), and they’re down the track trying to fix and resolve thing before they really understand what is really the issue. And they feel like if they are getting an emotional response out of the patient then they are really getting to it. That’s really not very effective.
This is why many of my clients have had two, three prior treatment failures. The people started their therapy before they really understood what the lay of the land was as it relates to this problem and how this person is.
A lot of times the therapist concludes “oh I’ve seen this before, its depression, and this is what you should do.” Well, it may be depression but it’s going to look different with each person. And it’s going to be based on different things for each person.
For some people, depression is going to be related to how relationally they are working. For others it will be due to the amount of overwhelm they have in their life. But you can’t treat everyone as if you have a template for depression and you’re going to push everyone through it. A lot of therapist practice template therapy.
